Join the Inline Certification Program  (ICP) Instructors, Examiners, and skating enthusiasts from around the world in sharing your passion and love for all things skating.  Lectures, workshops, night skates, skate demos and a dance party will bring us together to celebrate fitness, fellowship and the FUNdamentals that are the foundation of a quality inline skating experience.   Additional FREE pre- and post- conference skills workshops and nights skates will bookend this unique skating opportunity.

Descriptions of Conference Offerings

Bench Marking   Improve your understanding of Level 1 & Level 2 skills by seeing what is considered ICP passing standard for each skating skill.  Regardless if you are a certified instructor or skating enthusiast, you will gain experience in understanding the three keys of each skills and how proper technique will not only lead to successful skills execution but to the perfect “model” as well.

Blade Fitness™   Originally developed in association with Reebok University and inspired by training methods used by inline skating professionals, Rollerblade’s Blade Fitness™ is an effective low impact, calorie-burning workout.  Come ready for a great skating workout and leave with ideas on how you can add more fitness and fun to your own skating or classes.

Creative Problem Solving    If you have a student that just can’t “get it” and you have exhausted all your tricks, attend this clinic to find out more ways to help your students find success while skating.  Learn different methods of teaching the same skills such as the Heel Stop, the Parallel Turn, Cross-overs and others, as well has some visual and audio cues that will enhance your teaching abilities.

ICP Dance Party  DJ+Hot Music +Skates=A Whole lot of Fun!   On or off skates get your dance on while moving and grooving to the hottest dance hits of the 80‘s 90’s & today!

Freestyle Dance  Freestyle dance skating is all about freedom of expression. It is an individual’s interpretation of music through movement. Some traditional moves such as the “shuffle”, “the tap dance kid” and “crazy legs” will be broken down into small steps for easy learning.  Once the basics are mastered one will be able to join the following skate dance areas NYC’s Central Park, Hyde Park,  San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park, etc. and feel right at home.  Learn new moves and have fun “freestyling”!

Level 1 Skills Prep/Refresher   Just about everyone knows that all good skating starts with a strong foundation of moving, stopping, and turning-all of which can be found in the ICP Level 1 Program.    In the last few years we have made a few changes to required skills list as well as skill progressions.  So if you have been away from ICP for a while, thinking of becoming an instructor, or just want to improve your own skating this workshop is for you!

Level 2 Skills Prep/Refresher   Thinking of going for your ICP Level 2 and are not sure what to expect?  Let us show you what you’re in for! Work on improving your technique for the skating skills required for the ICP Level 2 Program as well as your ability to monitor adjust yourself or your students for the Level 2 skills set. 

Level 1 & 2 Retest Session   ICP Examiners will be on hand to access Instructor Candidates who received a “Conditional Pass” in the last 12 months.  Candidates can retest skating skills and practical teaching during this session.  Pre-registration and additional fee required. 

Mobile Yoga© Off Skate Session  Does your back, knees, or neck ache after a long skate? Do you just have too much stress in your life?  Learn some basic yogic postures and breathing techniques that can help strengthen your muscles, improve flexibility, alleviate muscle soreness, and dissolve emotional strains that might be keeping you from enjoying your skating life.  Experience how skating can be your “moving meditation.”

Park Night Skate     With the assistance of ICP Instructor trained group skate volunteers enjoy a casual skate through Singapore’s East Coast Park.   Practice negotiating pedestrians, hills, turns, etc. as you enjoy  the beauty of the park and seaside.

Safe Skating Clinic  Make your way seaside to East Coast Park where you will be joined by ICP Examiners and Certified Instructors to help you skate better and improve your understanding of the basics of safe skating.

Slalom & Slide Presentation & Give the Basics a Try!   Certified ICP Instructors and slalom and slide experts will give a demonstration of the basics of these high profile and exciting skating disciplines.  After the demo put your skates on and let ICP Certified Instructors and Examiners assist you in performing some slalom and slide favorites such as the Snake, Crisscross, Forward/Backward Power Slide, Fakie Acid Slide, etc.

Stride Development Fitness Stride-Double Push  Get some practical experience in learning the skill progressions that will aid you in your quest to skate, better, farther, and faster. If you are a novice skater or have been skating for years this clinic will include several skill-building exercises that will improve your stride technique regardless of your current skill level.

Urban Night Skates  With the assistance of ICP instructor trained group skate volunteers explore downtown Singapore on an exciting night skate.  The route will differ each night and will include Singapore landmarks and tourist hot spots such as Orchard Road, Marina Bay Sands Hotel, Singapore Flyer, the World’s Largest Fountain, etc.

Working with Children-Fundamentals of Development & Adaptive Learning Lecture   This workshop gives an overview of how to successfully teach children to skate and accommodate the special needs skater into your group lesson classes.   ICP Examiners and local teaching experts give suggestions on how best to manage a diversified group of students and how to effectively use praise during a lesson to maximize the skater’s experience.

Working with Children On Skate-Class Handling, Motivation, & Games  Improve your relations with children of all ages. How to be firm, yet fun, with kids (setting the ground rules).  Discuss the importance of name recognition, a positive and exciting attitude, fun and challenging games focused on learning specific inline skills.

Singapore

July 10-12

Singapore is a small country with a big love for skating.  The number of skate schools and skaters per capita is probably among the highest in the world. For those who love to skate and teach skating this is the place for you!

Emeline was a candidate in the first batch of ICP instructors certified in the country back in 1999 and is now a Level 3 Instructor and International Examiner. For more than 12 years she has been an influential and vocal advocate for the ICP and has been around the sport in various capacities working as an instructor, skate school director, and volunteer.  As the owner of SportsQuest, a professional and quality sports education school,  she brings a strong business background as well as her love for all types of sport and fitness to the position.  Emeline can be reached at emeline@sportsquest.com.sg

An ICP Perfect "T"!

ICP Level 1 – London 9th-11th Sept 2011
The autumn ICP Level 1 course held in London in September was as usual a
fun, long and productive weekend of learning and skating. I love the
diversity of skaters that this certification course attracts and how we all
learn about the skate scenes of different places and countries from hearing
about them first hand.

Examiner Mark Davies and I  had skaters from London (of course, this is always normal), but this
course also attracted an Italian (with the best English I’ve heard in a long
time, complete with ‘wot?’, an Irish Roller Derby skater working in a new
rink, Skaters from Nottingham and Northampton, a Cambridge university
student, a slalomer, etc.  I enjoy watching how their various past
experiences on skates inform their current ability levels and how they
respond to the tuition, guided learning and discovery of the ICP Level 1.

The course felt like a success in that 8 of the 10 participants passed and are now instructors and everyone expressed positive feedback about the course.  Despite me being pretty ill throughout the course I know I managed to deliver what the candidates needed and hoped to infect them with my enthusiasm for teaching. Many of them are already teaching and I look forward to certifying them at a higher level and watching the skate scenes in their areas grow accordingly.

Candidates Watch Mock Lesson

The Inline Certification Program made it’s way to China two weekends ago where ICP Examiners Emeline Tan, Mike Tang, and Apprentice Examiner Brent Tay certified 18 out  of 22 candidates. The program in Dongguan China was the ICP’s second program conducted in China, the first being a successful program in Beijing in 2007 sponsored by the company Rollerblade.  The Dongguan candidates represented provinces around the country and included seasoned skating instructors, skate club presidents, skate competition judges, skate business owners, university students, general skate enthusiasts.

From the Friday night presentation it was clear that this group came prepared and ready to learn.  The weekend was filled with “ah, ha” moments and the candidates improved their skating and teaching with every peer lesson taught.   At the graduation dinner many of the newly certified expressed their eagerness  to take what they learned back to their cities and provinces doing their part to bring safe and effective skating instruction to all parts of China.

The Empire Skate Club of New York’s eight annual Big Apple Roll Weekend – BAR 2011 is an exciting weekend, Friday-Saturday-Sunday, August 5-7, 2011, of group skates, adventures, touring, exploring and experiencing New York City on skates. Party with old friends, make new ones, feel the rush of skating the City’s streets. Enjoy the beautiful urban scenery, smooth pavement, rolling hills and fast straight-aways. Central Park is also the capital of dance skating where you can join the world’s greatest skate dancers and slalom skaters / “cone-heads” for a truly unique experience.
