Great Skating, Teaching & Eating in Valencia Spain!

March 9, 2015

by ICP Examiner Asha Kirkby

After an amazing winter of skating where I did an ICP course in Rio de Janeiro in temperatures of 40 °C (104°F) followed by a freezing weekend teaching in London for my skate school, this latest Spanish ICP course in Valencia had my personal thermostat singing with joy at beautiful  sunny conditions and perfect 26°C (78°F) heat.

I was lucky to have Pepa Gil, Spanish Apprentice Examiner approaching her final stages of training as I could rest my recovering hip injury and left much of the skating to her. We were joined by Natalia Santanaria from Burgos, ICP Spain's administrator as another pair of eyes on the team.

As usual, skaters came from all over Spain and this course had the unique aspect of many participants being taught or prepared by existing ICP instructors. It is no surprise that I have found that the best instructor candidates are those who have trained with current certified instructors prior to taking the course.

1am Study Group from Salamanca, Spain!

It was reafirming to see how well the ICP method work as this was perhaps the strongest course in terms of skating abilities and teaching results (with 2 candidates sharing a spectacular 96% each for their teaching exams). It was a pleasure to examine such a well prepared and talented group!

Given the above, the program results were above average with 9 out of 10 passing candidates.
The enthusiasm and positivity of this course was a great antidote to the usual intensity and pressure and as always I hope the connections made between the candidates last a long time and are productive into the future.

We all share a passion for skating and when that passion is contagious we really can make a difference in our students' lives and in the process our own. I felt truly grateful for my job  this weekend helping people step into the role of certified instructor, knowing they will all do their very best to spread their love of skating as far and as deeply as possible.

A huge thanks to Pepa's husband Carlos (ICP Head Chef) for feeding 3 ravenous women each evening a delicious array of local cuisine.
