After spending time in South Korea the previous week conducting snowskating demonstrations and watching the amazing snowskate athletes surf the slopes of Pyeongchang in Sled Dogs Snowskates, I was excited to make my way to Germany to do more of the same!  Our second Snowskate Certification Program (SCP) program in Europe started on Saturday 16 December in the wonderful facilities of the Elitesport Schüle in Altenberg, Germany.

The Elitesport Schüle is a school in the Saxton region of Germany where students can train for various snow sports while keeping up simultaneously with their academic studies. With the rock solid knowledge of Philipp Auerswald a certified school teacher, ski and snowboard instructor, former national competitor in ski cross in Germany and world champion of Sled Dogs Snowskates Bonefight 2018, as well as SCP Director Kris Fondran, we started the SCP theory session.  Candidates coming from Czech Republic, Lithuania, and Poland with backgrounds in skiing, snowboarding, ice speed skating, and inline freestyle skating were in attendance.

SCP Altenberg Theory

After the theory presentation, we when right across the street from the school to a lovely and charming ski resort, the Ski und Rodelarena Altenberg/Geising.  This is where we would be conducting the “on snowskate” part of the course.

For two days the SCP candidates went through all the basics of snowskating starting with slope safety, the most important, and worked toward building a solid understanding of the fundamentals of teaching snowskating.

SCP Altenberg Introduction

While I have personally spent a fair amount of time on the slopes skiing, teaching a class on the slopes is completely different! The slope adds a layer of complexity in class handling and skill development that may not be intuitive to the traditional skating instructor who is accustomed to teaching on the pavement or ice. It is important to note that while snowskates are incredibly easy for skaters to adapt to, understanding how to ride a slope and abiding by “rules of the slope” at all times often needs to be taught.

SCP Night Teaching

Our group of SCP candidates were all seasoned snowskaters and were able to easily adapt the teaching model to their strong snowskating skill set. It was rewarding to see how quickly the instructor candidates were able to adapt to the teaching model and safely and effectively teach a class on the snow. It is always said that this model (the Madeline Hunter Teaching Model) is independent to what is being taught and  allows those who are new to teaching easily grasp and apply teaching fundamentals and it is true. Just like that, the “ICP Teaching Model” has become the “SCP Teaching Model”!

As always, the weekend went by quickly with a lot of laughs and learning along the way. On Sunday afternoon we had a new batch of certified snowskating instructors join our ranks this season.

Gluhwein Warm up

Learning to snowskate and teach others to do the same has been the most fun I have had in a very long time! Just as the ICP has been a vehicle of safety and education for inline skating, I believe the SCP will do the same to help bring snowskating to mountains around the world. Cheers to ensuring the acceptance and growth of this exciting new snow sport!

Cheers to SCP
